* Google maps - my maps

Posted on April 12th, 2007 by Chris Car. Filed under Technology.

Google released an update to their Google Maps online application: it is possible to create your own maps containing your own location information: you can create location marker with a text description and you can even draw shapes into your map. And the best thing: you can share you map by a unique link. This is just a great feature. Can’t wait to enter my favourite places - for example St. Oberholz, a great coffee place in Berlin.

See an example of my map - just click at the location marker in the map ;-)

* Video about mesh networking

Posted on March 28th, 2007 by Chris Car. Filed under Technology.

Last summer I was invited to give an interview about mesh networks and my experiences at the company 4G Systems. The video has been published at CitizenShift and Jason Gonziola added very nice visuals to my explanation. ;-)

Watch it

Update: I still like the idea of interconnected mesh networks but the idea seems still so far away… and I guess we will see massive Wimax networks before mesh is taking off. My theory is that it has to “hurt” people in order to leave their internet provider in favor for a self-organized citizen networks. So what could hurt people? Restricted or no access to censored content on the internet. Or slow access to web sites which don’t pay your internet provider… there could be many reasons.

Joi Ito as a visionary did a quite interesting step to avoid this situation: he rented his own “dark fiber” line, without any network provider as an intermediate. Not bad. ;-) Maybe more effective than WiFi networks, if there is a fiber connection around your house.

* Vintage computing, gopher

Did you know that I am a fan of gopher? I like the clean and simple interface. I like the word gopher and the look of the gopher URLs. Explore the world of gopher with the hal3000 gopher directory: gopher://hal3000.cx. And don’t forget to check the gopher jewels!

* Espace Canoe

The new personal webspace / social network Espace Canoe offered by Quebecor Media doesn’t allow external links within blog posts. Just subscribe, create a blog post and wonder… aren’t links the basis of the web? (Even I link to Espace Canoe ;-) ).

Update: I tried to create a blog post with a link in it on Espace Canoe again, and yes! there was an icon which allows you to create external links. This icon was not there the first time I tried it. Anyways… and btw, this platform seems to be really well done!

* Fake your space!

Tired of adding friends on myspace.com? FakeYourSpace sells popularity for only $0.99 per month.

(sorry for that one, but I was amazed by finding this service!)
